Raising kids in a tech-dominated world requires an intentional mindset and awareness of some old fashioned parenting. Of course, we want our family members to embrace new technology and to keep up, to stay connected, and most importantly, to stay safe! But technology can sometimes divide us from each other too in homes. And with so many single parent homes, raising kids hasn't gotten any easier.
We believe our products help encourage "live" in-person living. Now there are classes, interventions even for the technology-addicted. We believe the dynamics in our homes are what really keep our families going strong, sharing, celebrating, loving. Just create a space in your home where you can spend time doing other things besides staring at a computer, talking on the cell phone or texting. Do the things you really enjoy: be with people or just be by yourself.
When facing frustrations, nothing beats taking a break from the task at hand than just taking a break. Engage with your child and just talk. Describe the feelings they're having and share that you sometimes feel that way too. Have a laugh - lighten up (in sunrooms, conservatories, patio rooms or otherwise) and be playful.
A good parenting book if your clueless about your child's online world and the net generation is: Me, MySpace, and I by Larry D. Rosen, Ph.D. It shares a lot of useful information like a list of IM (instant messaging) words and their meanings, a description of MySpace.com, and tips for recognizing and handling cyber-bullying.
Cafemom.com is a virtual community of moms and a unique search tool that locates moms whose children are the same age as yours. Meet new friends, join a group or start a journal when you need to decompress and collaborate.
Our conservatories, patio rooms, sunrooms, basement finishing are tough! They have to be!
